That's the headline finding from six months of session telemetry covering 1.2 million spins across 40 operators, and it has less to do with the games themselves than with how mobile networks handle a very specific type of latency.

What the data actually shows

The study tracked spin-to-result times on 12 high-variance slots between January and June 2025. On fibre (FTTP, sub-10ms ping), median spin resolution sat at 340ms. On 4G, that climbed to 810ms — and crucially, the variance widened too. The 95th percentile on 4G hit 2.4 seconds, against 620ms on fibre.

Why does that matter for free spins specifically? Because free spin rounds are auto-triggered in sequence. A player on fibre completes a 10-spin free round in about 3.4 seconds of cumulative processing. The same round on 4G takes over 8 seconds — and if the connection drops mid-sequence, some operators' session logic treats the round as abandoned rather than paused. That's where the "decay" comes from: not the spins themselves vanishing, but the effective number of spins a player can realistically complete inside a session before attention or connectivity fails.

The measured decay rate was 47% — meaning a player on 4G completed, on average, 53% of the free spins a fibre player would complete in the same 15-minute window.

Why latency, not speed, is the culprit

It's tempting to blame bandwidth. It isn't the issue. A single slot spin payload is tiny — typically under 40KB including RNG call and result animation triggers. Even a poor 4G connection handles that easily.

The problem is round-trip time and jitter. Slot clients ping the game server on every spin for the RNG result, then again to confirm the outcome for audit logging. On a stable fibre line, those two calls happen in a predictable 300–400ms. On 4G, they queue behind tower handoffs, packet retransmits, and — in busy urban cells — contention from other users. The animation buffer problem

The regulatory angle

But it does require that bonus terms be "not unfair" under the Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations 2008. Whether a free spin round that silently expires because a player's train went through a tunnel counts as unfair is, at minimum, arguable.

An open question worth watching

If 47% of free spin value evaporates on the connection type most UK players actually use, is the advertised spin count on a bonus ever the real number? Or is it a fibre-only figure that most customers will never see? The three operators who fixed it suggest the industry already knows the answer — and is choosing not to act on it.
