The Exploitability of "Correct" Play

At 100bb, solver-approved plays like check-raising the turn with a gutshot are standard. At 300bb, the same solver line often involves a massive over-bet jam on the river with a blocker. At 300bb effective stacks, that number can push past 200bb per 100 hands. Your bankroll requirements triple, but your edge does not. You are paying a massive premium in variance for a strategy that only shows a marginal theoretical return over a simpler, tighter approach.

When the Solver Line Becomes a Tell

The Over-Bet Problem

Solvers love over-bets on the river at deep stacks. They use them to polarise ranges and apply maximum pressure. But at 300bb, most players—even good ones—do not have a well-practised response to a 1.5x pot river bet. They either fold too much or call too wide. If you are the one making that bet, you are relying on your opponent to play a balanced defence. If they don't, your "balanced" range becomes face-up.

The Check-Raise Frequency Trap

The Practical Solution

The better approach at 300bb is to simplify. Drop the low-frequency, high-variance lines. Focus on value-betting thin against calling stations and folding aggressively against tight players. Use a solver to understand the shape of the ranges, not the exact frequencies. You are not trying to be unexploitable; you are trying to be less wrong than your opponent.

The implication is uncomfortable for the theory-first crowd: if you cannot execute a mixed strategy with perfect discipline, the solver's output is not a solution—it is a liability. The open question for UK players grinding deep-stack games is whether the theoretical EV of these lines ever justifies the practical cost of your own mistakes, or whether the edge lies in deliberately playing a "worse" strategy that your opponents cannot punish.
