RNG Tables Hold 4% More Edge After 60 Minutes Than Live Ones
The gap is real, and it widens with time on the table. Across a 60-minute session at comparable stakes, RNG roulette and blackjack tables returned roughly 4% less to the player than their live-dealer equivalents at the same operator, according to session data from 1,200 tracked hours across three UK-licensed sites in Q1 2024. The headline number hides the more useful question: how much of that 4% is the game, and how much is the player?
The maths behind the gap
Start with the house edge, because it explains most of the divergence before player behaviour enters the frame.
Live European roulette runs a single-zero wheel: 2.70% edge. RNG European roulette usually matches that on paper. The difference is what operators do with the rules. Many RNG tables run American wheels (5.26% edge) or apply a "la partage" surcharge that live tables don't, and a chunk of the RNG market defaults to 97.3% RTP rather than the 98.65% a fair single-zero wheel implies.
Blackjack is worse. Live tables typically deal 6 or 8 decks with a 0.5%–0.6% edge under basic strategy. RNG blackjack often runs 99.54% RTP on the base game but applies side-bet prompts and auto-stand rules that push effective edge past 1.2%. Over 60 hands an hour at £10 a hand, that's £7.20 in expected loss versus £3.00 live. Scale to 200 hands and the gap compounds.
That accounts for maybe 2.5 points of the 4%. The rest is behavioural.
Why the gap widens after 60 minutes
Live dealers impose friction. You wait for the wheel, the shuffle, the deal. RNG tables don't. The result is a hands-per-hour and spins-per-hour rate that runs 30%–50% higher.

More decisions per hour means more exposure to the house edge, and it means faster bankroll depletion. A player who budgets £100 for an evening finishes it in 90 minutes on RNG and three hours live — if they stop at the budget. Most don't.
There's a second effect. RNG tables are always available, always open, no queue. The friction that live tables provide — waiting for a seat, waiting for a hand — acts as a natural circuit breaker. Remove it and session length on RNG tables runs 22% longer in the same data set.
What operators know about this
This isn't a secret in the industry. Live dealer is marketed as premium, with higher minimums and slower cadence, while RNG tables carry the volume. Operators price accordingly: live tables often carry lower effective margins because the product sells itself on atmosphere. RNG tables carry the margin because they're frictionless.
The UK Gambling Commission's remote gambling returns for 2023–24 show online casino games (predominantly RNG) generating £4.2bn GGY, against £1.1bn for live dealer. The RNG category is where the money is, and the 4% edge differential is one reason why.
The question the data doesn't answer
Is the 4% a product of game design, or of what players do once the friction is gone? The two are tangled. A player who sets a 60-minute timer and sticks to it will lose less on RNG than a player who doesn't, regardless of table type — because the edge per decision matters less than the number of decisions.
What the data can't tell us is whether the same player behaves the same way at both tables. The 22% longer session length on RNG suggests not. If the difference is player behaviour rather than game maths, then the fix isn't switching tables — it's the timer, the deposit limit, and the willingness to stop at 60 minutes rather than 90.
