Bonus buys on UK-licensed slots return roughly 27% less per spin once a session passes 60 spins, according to session-level RTP data pulled from 14 high-variance titles between January and March 2024. The drop isn't in the maths of the game — it's in how the buy is priced and how players sequence it. Past that 60-spin threshold, the effective return on a £50 buy falls from about £48.60 to £35.40 in expected value terms, assuming the same stake and the same slot.

That's a structural problem, not a run of bad luck. And it's one the UK Gambling Commission has started to take an interest in.

Where the 27% figure comes from

The number is an aggregate, not a single game's RTP. Analysts tracked 8,400 bonus-buy sessions across titles with published RTPs between 96.1% and 96.5%, logging each buy's stake, the return, and the spin index within the session.

Sessions under 60 spins averaged a 97.2% return on bonus-buy spend. Sessions over 60 spins averaged 70.9%. The gap — 26.3 percentage points, rounded to 27% in the headline — isn't caused by the RNG. It's caused by three things stacking:

  • Buy-price drift. Several providers tier buy prices by stake, and the tiers don't scale linearly. A £20 buy on one title returns 96.4% RTP; the £50 buy on the same game returns 94.8%.
  • Feature selection. Past spin 60, players disproportionately buy the most expensive feature rather than the highest-RTP one. On a typical 3-feature slot, the top-tier buy often carries a 0.4–0.9 percentage point RTP penalty.
  • Re-buy behaviour. The 60-spin mark correlates strongly with a second or third buy in the same session. Re-buys have a median return 12% below first buys.

Why 60 spins specifically

The 60-spin mark isn't arbitrary. It maps to the average length of a base-game "warm-up" — the period before a player commits to a buy. On the 14 titles studied, the median time-to-first-buy was 47 spins; the median time-to-second-buy was 61.

Once a player crosses that line, two things change. First, they've usually absorbed a base-game loss, which shifts their reference point and makes a higher-variance buy feel justified. Second, they're more likely to be in a bonus-funded session, where the buy is paid from bonus credit rather than cash — and bonus credit often has a wagering contribution of 0% on bonus buys, meaning the buy does nothing to clear the requirement.

That second point matters more than the first. If a £50 buy contributes nothing to a 35x wagering requirement, the player is effectively paying £50 for entertainment with no progress toward unlocking the bonus balance. The effective cost of that buy, once you account for the dead wagering, is closer to £68.

The regulatory angle

The Commission's 2023 consultation on bonus buys stopped short of banning them, but it did flag "disproportionate spend relative to session length" as a harm indicator. Operators are now expected to intervene at defined spend thresholds, and several have set those thresholds at 60 spins or 3 buys per session — whichever comes first.

So the 27% figure has a second life: it's a rough proxy for the point at which operator intervention kicks in. That's not a coincidence. The same behavioural data that shows returns falling also shows harm markers rising, and the two curves track each other closely.

What it means for players

The practical takeaway isn't "never buy a bonus." It's that the buy decision has a shelf life. A single buy in the first 60 spins of a session is priced roughly as advertised. The third buy at spin 120 is not — and the RTP figures on the game's info panel won't tell you that, because they describe the feature in isolation, not the session you're actually in.

The open question is whether operators will ever publish session-level RTP, or whether the 27% gap stays a number players have to infer from their own bankroll. Given the direction of travel from the Commission, the former looks more likely than it did a year ago — but "likely" and "required" are still a long way apart.
